Multi-thinking, a creativity strategy from Jeffrey Baumgartner

August 29, 2008 By Linda Dessau

I’ve been thinking a lot about multi-tasking lately, mostly recognizing how detrimental it is to my productivity, peace of mind and relationships. I know that the busier I get, the more I feel the need to multi-task, and since this has been such a busy summer, well, the multi-tasking has gotten out of hand.

I really appreciated this article by Jeffrey Baumgartner, which invites us to consider "multi-thinking" instead of multi-tasking. He says that we’re doing it anyway, so we might as well relax into it and capitalize on the ideas it can produce.

Similar to the idea catchers that I’ve written about, such as blogging and Jott, he encourages readers to keep an open notebook nearby to capture your ideas while staying on task.

Writing Prompt: Carry around a notebook with you for the day (or week), and notice any synergistic moments where you’re doing something totally unrelated and it sparks an idea for your business.

A story that shows how writing works to attract new business (not chase it)

August 27, 2008 By Linda Dessau

A friend of mine is pregnant and she’s having some physical challenges as a result. An alternative health clinic in her neighborhood put out a newsletter and one of the practitioners, who specializes in pregnancy, wrote an article about some of the issues he treats successfully in his practice.

She saw herself and her own symptoms in the article, called him up to make an appointment and now he has a new client!

Writing prompt: What problems or symptoms do you solve for your clients? How can you describe them in the same language your clients use, so that they see themselves in your writing and are drawn in?

I’m on “stay-cation” this week

August 24, 2008 By Linda Dessau

I'm on "stay-cation" this week, meaning that I'm taking a break from my business but I'm not traveling.

So, what am I doing instead? Well, some visiting with friends and family, for sure. I've been logging a lot of extra hours in my home office this summer, between finishing my book and also having a wonderful abundance of Greyhounds in Need of Adoption (GINA) and I'm eagerly waiting to hear back and schedule my home visit.

As a first-time dog owner, I'm very excited about this new phase of my life.

I've already done lots to prepare, but I'll be spending more time reading, researching and budgeting this week. The most important thing I need to do is clear some space, to make room for the dog and let her know there is space for her in my home and in my life.

Even though I did a major clutter clearing years ago when I began my self-care journey (with the help of Karen Kingston's Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui), there was some stuff I held on to, and some new stuff I've acquired since then.

I set the goal of combining my two full bookcases into one, and I'm think when I'm done I'll actually have some room to spare. Another gift this dog is giving to my life, and she isn't even here yet!

Serving up a pink spoon to midlife moms

August 22, 2008 By Linda Dessau

Coach Kellie deRuyter is working with Kenn Schroder to build a new website, and Kenn sent her my way (thanks, Kenn!).

Kellie has a wonderfully unique niche of midlife moms of young children, and as a midlife mom herself, she has a lot to offer!

In our Claim Your Expertise session, Kellie and I came up with the outline for a free report she could offer to her website visitors, in exchange for their name and email address.

That way, she can follow up with them later, with either:

  • Single mailings that announce her other similar resources, products or services that address the same topic
  • Automatic follow-up messages that gradually help her visitor get to know her better
  • A regular newsletter that does it all

Kellie's report serves as a "pink spoon," as I wrote about in the post, "How big is the leap from your site to your sales?"

When I asked Kellie what is was like to work with me on finishing her pink spoon, she said:

"Getting started on my report was the hardest part for me. I couldn’t decide what to write about or how to write it, and I was too busy to spend focused time trying to figure it out. So I procrastinated for months, until I finally asked Linda for help.

I really liked how professional, yet relaxed and flexible Linda was. She was pleasant, gracious and willing to think out of the box when it came to how I could use her services. Her outline and ideas allowed me to write a nine-page report easily, and her suggested edits made my material sound better while still allowing my personality to come through."
